Mackwell Electronics has supplied its N-Light System to Bristol City Council (BCC) for the refurbishment of four warden controlled accommodation sites for the elderly.

CASE OVERVIEW

A joint project between Fern-Howard and Mackwell, the emergency lighting is primarily intended to provide illumination to enable people to see their way safely out of a building in cases of emergency and, of course, this is vital when dealing with elderly people who may have difficulty seeing or become disorientated more easily.

Fern-Howard was approached by BCC to look at the refurbishment of emergency lighting at Cotebank House, Farringford House, Latchmoor House and St Catherine’s House, built between 1970 and 1981. The number of flats at each establishment ranges from 23 to 42 but they all house people over the age of 60. A key requirement in the brief from BCC was to ensure compliance through the automation of the emergency testing on a monthly and annual basis across multiple locations in the city in accordance with IEC 62034:2012 Automatic test systems for battery powered escape lighting.

SOLUTION

Having undertaken initial calculations to establish the right levels of emergency lighting necessary for the project, Dan King from Fern-Howard approached Mackwell for a solution that was easy to install and commission and N-Light fitted the bill perfectly. Taking this into account, a solution was delivered that provides the right amount of light for the appropriate duration, with light sources positioned so that the occupants of the facility can be evacuated safely and quickly in an emergency. Fern-Howard’s Exodus emergency LED bulkheads were installed with Mackwell’s N-light EM replacing the standard EM functionality generally sold with the fitting.

Dan commented “The N-Light system is such a simple but effective system for monitoring and reporting on emergency lighting, the Mackwell EM components can be incorporated into any Fern-Howard Luminaire easily within production and manufacturing. Once installed, the commissioning of the N-Light system is simple and intuitive, it takes very little time to set up grouping of products and test scheduling, meaning that the end client can very quickly realise the benefits this system offers. The touch screen panel, gives a visual indication on system status that everyone can understand”.

The Emergency testing is automated with N Light thereby removing the need for staff to do functional and duration testing using key switches. Time stamped test records are created providing an audit trail that can be further automated to provide e mail notifications of faults.

Dan added “After setting up 6 sites for Bristol Council now, we have yet to have any problems on over 500 products installed and all panels are indicating ‘green OK’. The N-Light system is the most effective system at automatically monitoring and testing a buildings emergency lighting and therefore eliminating monthly and annual testing costs which may have previously been incurred”.

N-Light from Mackwell provides an innovative and efficient approach to installing, powering and monitoring emergency lighting systems. Designed specifically to be used alongside general lighting that operates on a smart building platform to create a complete lighting solution. The massive project involves the refurbishment of 21 sites, six of which have already been completed on time and within the specified budget.
