This intimate theatre in Finsbury Park has centered itself as a pioneering venue championing diverse and modern theatre and has fast become a thriving beacon for the community.

CASE OVERVIEW

Park Theatre is the brainchild of Artistic Director Jez Bond, who discovered the space - at that time a disused office - in 2009. Realising its potential, Bond engaged David Hughes Architects - a first time theatre architect and the two embarked on a period of extensive research, to understand what ingredients made for the perfect theatre space and functioning building for the community.

Garnering support from the theatre community at large – including luminaries such as Ian McKellen and Alan Rickman, the press and, importantly, local residents including, Dominic Meyrick of Hoare Lea – they set out to raise the necessary funds to convert the tired concrete building into a thriving new theatre and beacon for the community. At a cost of just £2.6 million, the building, designed by David Hughes Architects, opened in May 2013 to rave reviews from the critics.

Since their grand opening, Jez Bond has continued to make upgrades, one important aspect being to improve the energy efficiency of the building, for which local resident, Dominic Meyrick of Hoare Lea was approached to provide Lighting Design expertise.

SOLUTION

Mackwell was petitioned to administer the emergency lighting element of the project by long standing partner Hoare Lea. Mackwell’s self-contained, high performance XYLUX LD3 luminaire was specified, along with a large number of replacement batteries.  Jez Bond comments “I’m proud to be Artistic Director of the only theatre in London that has LED emergency light fittings”.

A two auditorium venue, this new build incorporates a 200 seat theatre (Park200), and a smaller flexible 90 seat space (Park90). This is complemented by The Morris Space for education and rehearsal purposes, and a large café-bar and gallery which will open throughout the day.

It is important that exit doors are illuminated in a theatre if it’s occupied, as the people using such premises can be expected to be unfamiliar with the layout.

UK standards recommend that where the normal lighting may be dimmed or turned off, a maintained emergency lighting system should be installed. However, it was important to provide a solution of 100% blackout for the Theatre and due to the unique way the luminaires were wired, we provided that solution.

SUMMARY
  • XYLUX LD3 is a high performance self-contained LED emergency luminaire
  • The unit could be surface mounted or recessed allowing for flexibility
  • Mackwell's SmartCharge technology provided energy efficient charging maintenance, reduced operating temperatures and optimum service life of the NiMH batteries.
