CASE OVERVIEW

Set in the heart of London’s financial quarter, EC2, The NED is the epitome of 1920’s art nouveau. Once the iconic headquarters of The Midland Bank, the grade one building that houses the hotel is a triumph of architecture, both inside and outside.

The brief from the client and the architect was to remain empathetic and consistent with the original décor and furnishings that would have been enjoyed by the directors and bankers almost a century ago. The challenge was to marry the opulence and character of the past with 21st technology whilst not compromising the original architecture.
SOLUTION 

The combination of a Grade 1 listed building, together with an aim to bring comfort, relaxation and security to guests and clients alike, brings about many challenges when considering a contemporary, high performing, yet sympathetic lighting scheme. It was a natural progression therefore that a discrete and compliant emergency lighting scheme became essential in order to compliment the overall scheme whilst ensuring the ultimate safety of the occupants during times of evacuation or emergency.

Working in tandem with major lighting consultants and specialist luminaire engineering companies, Mackwell used its award winning XY-Fi solution to effect tailor made conversions to original chandeliers and lanterns in the main banking hall and the buildings iconic spiral stairwells.

XYLUX luminaires, together with XYVEX exit luminaires integrated seamlessly into the front of house serveries, boutiques and hospitality establishments, whilst Mackwell’s acclaimed N-Light CONNECT automatic test and monitoring system provided the hotel’s maintenance and facilities teams with the reassurance and peace of mind that the scheme continues to be monitored, tested and reported on in line with the mandatory requirements of the latest emergency lighting industry standards.
