With a spectator capacity of 12,345 it replaced the now-demolished former No. 1 Court which had stood at the west side of  centre coure since 1924 with a spectator capacity of 7,328. The old court was replaced by the Millennium Building, the media centre and facilities for players, members, and officials.

CASE OVERVIEW

Perhaps the top tennis championship in the world, Wimbledon is a British institution and one of the iconic places in London and Centre Court has just had an upgrade!

The purpose of the project was to improve the quality of lighting for broadcasters, whilst simultaneously improving the functionality of the lighting as part of the roof operation. Specifically, this involves reducing the amount of time required by the lights to warm up or cool down, thus making it quicker to resume play.

The development work has included the completion of the new fixed roof; the opening of “The Walled Garden” – a new two-level public plaza (formerly Court 19); a new, larger Big Screen for The Hill (18m in width); and the refurbishment of seven hospitality suites.

The original lighting controls have also been upgraded. Now all the lighting in Centre Court can be controlled remotely using a Quantum Total Light Management system.

The £70m remodelling of No. 1 Court will also see two additional tiers added to the existing court and will also include building a new two-level public plaza in place of Court 19.

SOLUTION

In this prestigious project, the lighting design specification was to have a compliant emergency solution that was also inconspicuous and blended into the surrounding environment. Whether it be in one of the publica areas or hospitality areas it was important to deliver sophistication and comfort to visitors, in keeping with the reputation of Centre Court.

Mackwell’s renowned high output LED luminaire, XYLUX LR3, with DALI capability and delivering 550 Lumens, fitted the brief perfectly. The XYLUX LR3 continues the XYLUX new generation of LED Emergency luminaires designed to be effective and unobtrusive, providing an equally aesthetic, high-performance and compliant emergency lighting system to help ensure the safety of both visitors, players, broadcasters and workers, further complimenting their experience.
