Emergency lighting has become a huge talking point within the industry over the past decade or so, with exciting advancements in technology, smart systems and the capability to integrate onto common networks with the sharing of information.

Mackwell Origin

Mackwell ORIGIN is the operating system at the heart of Mackwell drivers and devices, it combines 40 years of experience in emergency lighting into one piece of software. In essence Mackwell ORIGIN is an intelligent, technology platform with diagnostic capabilities that enables Mackwell to understand and control the effects of environmental factors on the efficiency and reliability of our emergency lighting drivers. Emergency lighting is often the last part of a project to be considered and can therefore become shoe-horned into products and situations where it is not performing at peak performance. Mackwell ORIGIN allows each and every driver to be perfectly tailored to its environment and harmonised with the components it must interact with.

Thermal compatibility of emergency conversions can often be the downfall of even the most diligent project. Starting with an efficient driver and charging system and expanding on this with detailed battery driver pairing allows the Mackwell ORIGIN drivers to be adjusted via software to gain peak lumen output whilst ensuring the battery sits well within the guidelines set by British standards and the battery manufacturer. These improvements in battery pairing reduce replacement costs and allow designers to incorporate emergency in fittings which may have previously required a secondary standalone emergency in the close vicinity.

The above innovation ensures that in lab conditions the luminaire is harmonised but to truly extend battery life, improvements have been made to ensure this ‘normal’ operation mode is reached quickly and sustained whenever possible. Mackwell’s SmartCharge feature has long been the pinnacle of battery control technology and is now bolstered by the incorporation of an 8 for 1 charge feature which allows the Mackwell ORIGIN drivers to only recharge for a proportional time in relation to the discharge or emergency event. In addition to this the combination of construction protection and battery voltage monitoring allows the Mackwell ORIGIN platform to inhibit emergency prior to building completion or allow a full discharge to aid in battery cycling when the situation allows for it.

Diagnostics functionality both during product reviews and in the field allow engineers to gain a better insight of the installation and the environment each product is placed in. This information is invaluable during product returns and warranty discussions, the ability to definitively prove misuse of a product allows significant increases in warranty when the product is used correctly.

SmartCharge

SmartCharge™ is incorporated within Mackwell’s emergency products to provide energy efficient charging maintenance, reduced operating temperatures and optimum service life of batteries.

Upon connection of a battery and mains supply to the emergency module, SmartCharge™ applies a constant charge rate to allow the battery to complete its nitial charge cycle within 24 hours. When the battery is fully charged, charging duty period is reduced to minimise standby power consumption whilst ensuring the battery is maintained in its fully charged state.

Subsequent to the initial charge cycle, SmartCharge™ employs intelligent monitoring of battery charge level to ensure an appropriate period of higher charge rate is applied after any interruption to the mains supply or following an emergency test.

Through the utilisation of SmartCharge™ technology, power consumption of emergency modules is reduced by typically two thirds and the service life of batteries extended as a result of their operating temperatures being reduced by up to 10°C.
