Northstowe Education Centre has been built on a sustainable new development between Cambridge and Huntingdon, that is richly steeped in local history, giving it an identity that is entirely unique and one that promotes health and wellbeing.

CASE OVERVIEW

Northstowe is a sustainable new development based on the site of the former RAF Oakington base and surrounding farmland between Cambridge and Huntingdon.

The development has the concept of sustainability at its heart. Its open spaces and buildings enhance biodiversity, creating green corridors all around. It will support a low carbon lifestyle with buildings that use less energy, fibre optic connectivity and electric vehicle charging points.

The education offer at its heart is key to its success and community sustainability. The town will have in the region of eight dedicated new schools including the Northstowe Education Centre. It will provide the next generation, and those looking to up-skill, the opportunity to grow, develop and set themselves up for a creative, and productive future.

Construction of Phase 1 of the campus is underway in partnership with South Cambridgeshire District Council and Homes England (HE), the government’s national housing agency.
SOLUTION 

Mackwell was invited to be involved in the project by partner Sylvania, with whom we have a longstanding relationship. It was imperative the emergency lighting supported the low carbon initiative at the core of the Northstowe community and integrated seamlessly into the modern building design.

It was a stipulation for the emergency lighting scheme to have the ability to be remotely monitored, potentially even off-site. The innovative N-Light is an efficient approach to installing, powering and monitoring emergency lighting systems, which provided this solution. N-Light CONNECT uses a Graphic User Interface touch-screen that gives live system status that can very easily identify any emergency luminaires that have failed an automatic test and of the maintenance action required.

We also provided a conversion solution using the uniquely designed ELEDD MIDI 55 3W DALI drivers. Due to Mackwell’s commitment to excellence we are able to support our partners and undertake pre-compliance tests for emergency conversions into projects such as this.

Mackwell’s used SmartCharge technology within the emergency products providing, energy efficient charging maintenance, reduced operating temperatures and optimum service life of NiMH batteries. Through the utilisation of Mackwell’s SmartCharge™ technology, power consumption of emergency modules is reduced by typically two thirds and the service life of batteries extended as a result of their operating temperatures being reduced by up to 10°C.
